I specialize in cultural anthropology. Since the mid-1980s, I have been conducting research on northern cultures and the life of indigenous people in urban centers, with a focus upon the Inuit of Canada. In recent years, my studies have extended to Aboriginal bowhead hunting in northwestern Alaska and Arctic Canada. Having an interest in indigenous cultures along the North Pacific Rim, I plan to broaden my research, in this Northeast Asia Area Study project, to the history of trading activities and socio-cultural interactions among the indigenous peoples living in the Northeast Asian Pacific coastal areas and those living in the Alaska and Northwest Coast of North America. I also plan to hold an exhibition on the indigenous cultures of Canada in September 2017.
