I have been conducting anthropological and ethnological research on the relationship between nature and human in the East Asian region including Japan. Although this relationship includes many different fields, I have focused on the subsistence techniques. This is because human faced the nature through skills and techniques. Specifically, I focus on Cormorant fishermen, who use domesticated cormorant to catch fish in rivers and lakes, China and Japan, to understand the historical change in cormorant fishing within the context of the social change and analyze the subsistence strategies of fishermen. I also focus on the Evenki reindeer herders in Daxing'anlin Forest Area, and describes their adaptive strategies under a changing environment. More recently, I began to conduct research on cormorant fishing in the Republic of Macedonia.
