Purpose

National Museum of Ethnology (NME) has utilized computers for the registration and information record of the collected materials since its foundation in 1974. It is one of the advanced museums in the digitalization of the museum information in the world. However, while the digital technology showed great progress during the 1990s and 2000s in both hardware and software, the museum could not always catch up with the progress, because it had been difficult for the museum to give up the old-fashioned but unique technology and systems. Now it is an urgent task for the museum to overcome this problem and to consider how to transfer the contents reserved in the old systems to the new ones. In this workshop, the museum will discuss such issues with the Russian Museum of Ethnography that shared the same problems.
