Objectives

We plan to discuss various problems related to environmental conservation in Asia, with an emphasis on ecological history of the region. Concerning the application parameters of ecological history, by adopting a perspective ranging from prehistorical times to the present, we hope to apply an historical approach to regional environmental issues. We plan to organize issues based on research of specific examples of reciprocally usable indigenous resource management and environmental development. We will implement our joint research based on knowledge gained from ecological anthropology, geography, history and prehistory concerning the usage systems in varying environments, including forests, slash-and-burn fields, rice paddies, swampy areas and coastal areas. We seek to identify the effectiveness and limitations of styles of environmental preservation unique to Asia and use this identification as a preparation period for publication of our results.
