Aims

Currently, the National Museum of Ethnology is holding a special exhibition "SARASA KONJAKU MONOGATARI" [Arabesque of Batik Designs and Techniques] from 7th September to 5th December. At this exhibition we show that the design and technique of Indonesian batik was adopted by the print and batik industries of Europe, Japan, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar, Australia, China, Africa and the Caribbean countries. Today the batik and printed textiles made in these countries have spread widely around the world as popular materials for clothing.

This symposium is held as a related project to the exhibition. We would especially like to discuss how the design and technique of batik developed in the batik industry of Indonesia and also in the print industries of Indonesia, Europe, and Africa. Furthermore we would like to discuss the factor of globalization of the designs and techniques of Javanese batik.
