A Study of Language Changes in rGyalrong Influenced by Tibetan and Chinese
Yan Muchu
The Tibetan nationality in China consists of ethnic subgroups classified by the languages they speak and the districts in which they live. In many villages of these districts, languages other than Tibetan are spoken as well. These languages are mainly distributed over Gansu, Qinghai, Sichuan, and Yunnan provinces, but the greater number of them are spoken in Sichuan. The one with the largest speaker population is rGyalrong. The rGyalrong language has many loanwords from Tibetan and Chinese. Since the 1950s the number of loanwords from Chinese has been increasing, while Tibetan borrowings have been decreasing. The influence of Chinese on the rGyalrong language has been getting greater, deeper, wider and more comprehensive. Recently, most rGyalrong=Tibetans living in villages are bilingual speakers of rGyalrong and Chinese, and do not speak Tibetan. Through an analysis of the loanwords it is possible to better understand how since the 1950s rGyalrong Tibetans have switched from using rGyalrong and Tibetan to using rGyalrong and Chinese. This demonstrates how changes in the functioning of society have resulted in a reversal of the relationship between these languages.

New Trends in Hakka Studies in Southeast Asia:
Some Perspectives from Singapore and Malaysia
Hironao Kawai
The Hakka, an ethnic group of the Han, have been studied by scholars from Europe, America, Japan and China. These studies are well known in Japan. However, Japanese scholars have still not fully caught up with Hakka studies in the countries of Southeast Asia. According to my recent research, some scholars in Singapore and Malaysia, where many Hakka people live, have started to pay attention to such studies. They use academic accomplishments to show the activities of Hakka circles and exhibitions from Chinese museums. This article aims at introducing new perspectives on studies of Chinese overseas, by focusing especially on those conducted in Singapore and Malaysia.

Expedition to the Tuvans in China, Russia,

This article is a preliminary report on the international expedition to the Tuvans in China, Russia, and Mongolia that was conducted in the summer of 2012 as a Cultural Resource Project of the National Museum of Ethnology (Minpaku). The author investigates features of the way of life and culture of the Tuvans living in these countries and clarifies the similarities and differences arising from their different social circumstances. The majority of Tuvans live in Russia, where they have a recognized position and territory— the Tuva Republic. In the territories of China and Mongolia, Tuvans are national minorities and do not have national-territorial status. However Tuvans of all three countries still keep their native language, ethnic consciousness and traditional culture. This article focuses on elements ranging from "historical baggage" to the language and cultural situation of this community, to relations with the host societies, and to the interaction between these factors.
