1:30 p.m –3:00 p.m. Part 1: Public Symposium “Culture Viewed from the Perspective of Water Vessels”: How are the new vessels (PET bottles) and modern water (mineral water) accepted and used in our everyday lives? We will have a look at the relationship between water and human beings through the “water vessels” that reflect modern society.

3:10 p.m.–4:00 p.m. Part 2. : Collaborative Workshop of the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature and the General Public (1) “Regions viewed from the Forms of Water”: Lecturer: NAGANO Takanori (Research Institute for Humanity and Nature)
What are “forms of water”? Mr. Nakano will explain regional characteristics of water, such as different forms and types of water, based upon scientific analysis of water quality. Would you like to join a water quality appraisal group and examine the “forms of water” that you are drinking in your daily life? We ask the participants to collect water that they are drinking everyday, and to bring or mail the water sample to the National Museum of Ethnology by April 12 (Monday). We ask for your cooperation to investigate water quality in the Kinki region. We will distribute containers for collecting water and explain how to mail them.

Water Workshop “Educational Program about Water: WET” (Foundation of River & Watershed Environment Management) end

By playing games, you will learn the importance of water and the natural environment.
Intended For: Elementary school students. (Children with parents are welcome.)
Seats are available for 20 child-parent pairs. (Advance application required. If there is a large number of applications, participants will be selected by lottery.)
First workshop: May 3 (Monday-holiday) 1:30 p.m.– 3:30 p.m.
Second workshop: May 4 (Tuesday-holiday) 1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Location: Seminar room No. 5 on the 2nd floor of the National Museum of Ethnology
Participation Fee: 500 yen (for cost of materials)

Program
“Blue Planet” (25 minutes): Looking at the proportion of ocean and land on the surface of our planet Earth we will think about our planet as a huge “water vessel”.
“Amazing Journey” (30 minutes): You will learn that water exists in different forms, such as rivers and seas, and that it comes to our hands via various paths.
“Aqua Body” (15 minutes): We will learn that our bodies are also “vessels of water” by finding out how much water human bodies contain.
“Rainsticks” (50 minutes): We will make “rainsticks (instruments that produce “sounds of rain”), which have been used for rain-making rituals, and think about water and culture.

Water Workshop “Wonders of Ocean / Wonders of Water” (1) (School of Marine Science and Technology at Tokai University) end

97.5% of the water on our planet is seawater. You will learn about “oceans” in the first part and the wonder of seawater in the second part.

Water Workshop “Wonders of Ocean / Wonders of Water” (2) (Saijo City and School of Marine Science and Technology at Tokai University) end

Saijo City of Ehime Prefecture, in developing its city, is making full use of its water environment–namely, its “basin groundwater.” We will introduce the water environment and people’s lives in the city in the first period of the workshop, and the groundwater quality survey during the second period.
