Objectives

Amidst the tumultuous political and economic conditions surrounding the Korean Peninsula, since entering the 1990s South Korean society has undergone drastic transformation and its cultural globalization too has unfolded at an extremely rapid pace. With this situation as the backdrop, while taking into account conditions in other regions of Asia, our committee will examine various aspects of the changes experienced by South Korean society. To do so, it will be necessary for us to also consider the relationships with the motherland and roles played by the more than six million South Koreans living overseas, including in China, the USA, Japan and Central Asia. Our research committee will discuss various issues stemming from the currently unfolding processes, and in addition to carrying out anthropological research concerning South Korean society, we will seek out possibilities for future research topics and methodologies.
