Aim of the symposium
National Museum of Ethnology underwent a major reorganization in 2017, when it celebrated its 40th anniversary, and the department of cross-field research was established then. Its mission is to deepen ethnography research on the regions around the world by crossing the region, ethnic group and disciplines and to create a field science beyond of anthropological area research.
This international symposium is organized by the Department for Cross-Field Research. Our aim is to focus on the materiality of historical records and the logic of historical construction, while integrating the disciplines anthropology and history. We will then consider the possible multiple or universal frameworks for constructing social history.
We have two keynote lectures about the intersection of anthropology and history in East Asia and the role of history in anthropological research in Southeast Europe and three sessions for this symposium-- ①Media and Forms of Recording History, ② Religion and Identity in Historical Perspective, ③The Usage of History in Social Movements.
The logic and conception of history is a fundamental and a contemporary issue that mankind has. Historical research helps to link the past, present and future of humanity in diverse ways and in diverse co texts. We will clarify how the history is used in the contexts such as ethnic movements and citizens' movements from the perspective of cross-field approaches.
