General Users, Please Look Here Library User Guide (General)

Entry

You may pass through the entry gate using your Minpaku personal security card. Please be sure to have it with you when you use the library.

  • For those who do not have a personal security card, we will issue one to joint-use researchers and affiliated researchers in the Library. Please apply at the counter.

Open Hours

  • Normal Open Hours Mondays-Fridays 9:00 a.m.to 5:00 p.m., Saturdays 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • After-Hours Use (Counter is Closed.) Mondays-Fridays 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Saturdays 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
    Sundays and Holidays 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
    • Even if Saturday is a holiday, the Library will have normal open hours.
    • The Library will be closed during the New Year’s holidays (December 28-January 4).

Lending

Please bring materials that you wish to borrow to the Library Counter.

  • In-Facility Lending means that the materials are used inside the National Museum of Ethnology (Minpaku). When you take the materials out of the facility, it becomes “Take-Out Lending.” Please select one or the other when the materials are lent to you.
  • Certain materials may not be lent out.
    You can check whether the item may be lent out when you perform a Collection Search For details, please view the National Museum of Ethnology Library Use Policy.
  • You will be required to pay for any damaged or lost materials. Handling of lost or damaged library materials
  • We ask that when you go overseas for business and cannot come to the library for an extended period (3 months or more), please return the materials lent to you before you leave for your trip.

Returns

Additional materials cannot be lent to you if you have overdue materials.
Please return materials to the Library Counter by the due date.
For after-hours returns or when the Library is closed, please use the Book Drop in front of the Library entrance.

Renewal of Lending Period

In general, materials cannot be renewed.
You must first return the item; if no one else has reserved it, you can borrow it again.

Reservations

You can reserve materials that are currently lent out.
You may apply at the Library counter, or you may make a reservation directly via OPAC.

  • Reservations via OPAC require an ID and a password.
    First-time users, please inquire at the counter.

Confirmation of Usage Information

You can check materials that are loaned out, their due date, and reservation status via our website.

Copying Materials

Library materials may be copied for investigation, research or study within the scope permitted by copyright law. Please apply at the library counter when you wish to make photocopies.

  • For those with a Copy Card
    Please fill in the Application Form next to the copier and make your copies.
  • For those without a Copy Card
    You can make copies at your own expense. Please apply at the Library Counter.

Requesting Materials from Outside Minpaku

You can request materials that are not in Minpaku’s collection (both in libraries in Japan and overseas, as well as the National Diet Library), so please consult us.

Using a library outside of the Minpaku will require an identification card and a letter of introduction, so please check in advance.
