ここ10年ほど、米国イェール大学と共同で進めてきたアンデス文明初期における公共建造物の出現と社会変容の関係についてまとめた学術書であり、アンデス考古学の重鎮から若手研究者まで参加し、最先端の成果が盛り込まれている。

世界の古代文明と比べると、アンデス文明では、その初期に都市ではなく、巨大な公共建造物(神殿)が出現することで知られる。本書では、その出現と、社会統合や社会的格差の関係が論じられている。この分野は、世界でも日本の学術的蓄積が群を抜いており、国際学界に対するより強いアピールになろう。
